For instance, the stimulus bill imposes tough new restrictions on H1B visas for highly skilled workers hired by companies getting bailout money—a sign that the country is turning inward, despite the cost to America’s long-term competitiveness.

This is foolish to kick out the most talented folks regardless of their nationality.

Possibly.

But I can see the impetus. Give Americans the jobs over foreigners, etc. No more outsourcing. I’d rather have everybody over here spending their money here, spending their brains here, etc., myself, but I can see what the thinking was, however misguided.

I’m curious who got that provision in there. I wish everybody had to mark their input. Was it Obama trying to placate the Republicans? (It seems a bit daft for Obama.) Or was it a conservative Democrat from a purple state?

We have people (foreigners) at work who are the most qualified for the job (world class talent) and now they could be deported, what happen to the idea that we’re becoming a world community. And I’m not sure if the Republicans ever proposed such a thing as this is the first that I heard of it. I’m all for merit and not politics when it comes to job placement regardless of race, religion or nationality.
But what do I know…

And on the other end of the spectrum there are many Americans working out of country for foreign company’s and were hired because they were the most qualified.

If we deported our immigrant scientists and engineers, we’d have almost no scientists and engineers left. We’d also have no women scientists and engineers (American women are barely interested in those fields at all from numbers and observation).

When I started at Lockheed Martin they told me of a financial reward program I could benefit from if I created and managed some sort of program to get American kids interested in science/engineering. They’re desperate.

It’s really frightening to me when I realize how much of the current economy and future we’re completely unable to participate in.

/broken record

There’s probably no way to say this without being insulting, so let me say up front that’s not the point of the comment—but the educational quality coming up from the No Child Left Behind era of America just ain’t that great. Basic literacy in the US is in a rapid downward spiral, and if you ain’t got literacy, you ain’t got shit.

Hopefully, with the new administration favoring science over faith, knowledge over greed things may start to turn around: but that’s going to take some time. The societal disgust / distrust of people with “book learning” or interests above a beer bong and getting laid will take a long time to counter.
