Yeah, it’s hard to really make much out of that “Evil” comment without knowing what it is (other than the obvious) that makes it demand that label. It’s not a painting I have any real affection for myself, but then again my own personal art collection is a bunch of pages from comic books and a photograph of an inverted stiletto heel being placed in a part of human anatomy it wasn’t really designed to fit ("Cherry", by Sarah Bowman).
I’d guess this poor woman does have some serious mental issues going on: it’s not like this was a Clockwork Orange type deal where she had to look at it.
AH well, people are fucked up in all kinds of interesting ways.
Now in my evil rankings, I’ll see your Koons and raise you a Banksy.
While not the best painting in the world, and not even the best by Gauguin, it does display (a conception) of beauty. Some women do have an issue with depictions of beauty along with those who create such depictions. Apparently the comeliness of of the objectors is not a factor, they just do not like the display of beauty, especially if the main focus is a woman.
This women apparently is more obsessed with the bare breasts and two exposed women standing together. I would speculate (as a totally unqualified observer) that this woman has issues that have developed because of the conflicting messages sent to our society by the beauty/entertainment industries and some of the more radical religious groups.
In the “right” circumstances, I guess anyone can be made to attack anything. I’ve not done the background work to know why this painting upset the attacker as it did (and by background work I do mean something sensible from a head shrinker, which, of course, couldn’t be made public).
Let’s just hope she gets whatever help she needs, and the rest of us can continue to admire Gauguin’s style, composition, coloring and a pair and a half of tits, which is what this is about, right?
(I keed, I keed: we are only what we create as a culture: this Gauguin piece adds to that, as I guess I must admit the works of Koons and Banksy does. Or do es. Or somesuch. Stop picking on me for being a trilobite…)
