So let me see if I have this right. CBS, (which I sorta thought was (yeah I guess past tense) the more liberal of the three networks to the extent that such a thing is possible) rejected a same sex marriage advocacy spot a couple years ago. At the time CBS said their policy was not to accept any issue advocacy ads. This year they allow the Tim Tebow’s + mother Christian faith anti-abortion ad. CBS’s explanation in light of the previously stated no advocacy ads policy? Oh, we have adjusted our policy. This crap just makes ya want to go out and f*ck a Budweiser clydesdale. Who’s with me?
Well the ad features Tim Tebow and his mother who you probably know are fervent Christians who ware very outspoken about their strong faith. Anyways the Superbowl spot is financed by a Christian pro-life / anti-abortion group and features Tim’s Mother talking about considering abortion when she was pregnant with Tim and glad she decided to keep him [presumably so he could wear grease paint under his eyes with biblical quotes on it at NFL games.
Allow what ads you want but changing the guidelines depending on the advocacy group involves erodes the credibility of both the explanation and the network itself.
I feel dirty arguing for CBS, but I have a feeling the precipitous policy change has more to do with how many entities are currently standing in line to fork over the money for Super Bowl ad time in our current circumstances than with any particular ideological bias. I have to be consistent, since I argue so often that our mass media has no margin in pushing any liberal social engineering agenda in the face of jeopardizing potential revenue.
But not surprising. Back when I went to school there, I used to receive bible quotes on top of my laundry pile whenever I picked up my laundry at the laundromat.
Well duh. Girls making out is hot to pretty much all straight men and a significant percentage of ladies. Guys making out is hot pretty much only to gay guys and a smaller percentage of ladies. Generally speaking, of course.
The publicity they’ve rcvd for having the ad refused is probably worth much more than running it would be. And it’s cheaper too!
The superbowl would be a great place to run the ad though, as you’ve for the eyeballs of missions of potential customers who like to watch burly men in spandex all rubbing up against each other and later all jumping into the showers together…
