I know there’s a long-standing dislike of Ben that goes all the way back to Catch.com days: personally, while I disagree with him on many fronts politically (and eXpelled was an awful, awful movie) he’s always struck me as being intellectually honest (eXpelled eXcepted), straightforward, and damn it funny. Ben Stein’s It’s Trivial is a great iPhone app. “How To Ruin Your Life” is the best self-help tome I’ve read (full disclosure, I’ve not read many). Ah, if only I were 30 years older and we were both gay…

I used to agree with you about Ben Stein but now I think he’s an idiot. eXpelled was just too big an exception for me to make.

Yeah, eXpelled was a real downer—I could care less whether Ben believes in evolution or not, but to take that to the level of claiming scientists and teachers were dismissed because they didn’t (which, in every case, was not actually the truth). He made partial amends for me when on a Fox show the question of whether the stimulus package created jobs came up: the token Democrat waffled on this, and Ben jumped in with “Of course it does, it creates police jobs, fire department jobs, construction jobs, and jobs everywhere that supply to those jobs, and jobs from people being employed—to think or claim otherwise is disingenuous.” (roughly that anyway, I’m working from memory).

Compared with the current provisional list of those who might be Presidential candidates on the GOP side, he’s a genius.

(Thanks for posting this despite your opinion of the topic BTW.)

Ugh, had long response, went to post it, it disappeared into the nether.  GRRRR.

Anyway, reasons for not posting something do not include my disagreement. Sometimes a link is too shrill, or too obvious, or just not interesting. This link is interesting.

Michael Steele is a cad, but the reason he has not lost his chairmanship is because in a party of cads, who’s to replace him? Seriously, they have nobody to step up. Ben Stein can whimper, but his notion of a Republican party of virtue is idealistic and archaic. Is he speaking of the Nixon years?
