OK, everyone: What would you choose for your funeral song?

My choice: Shellac’s cover of ACDC’s “Jailbreak.”

We went ot a funeral for a middle aged man, and they played Joe Cocker’s cover of “You Can leave Your Hat On”.
were we supposed to strip? I don’t know this protocol.

At a memorial service for a friend, one of his former bandmates stood up and started singing “I Bid You Good Night”, and most everyone pitched in pretty spontaneously. It was pretty damn moving.

If I were to ever die, I would want this little FleetwoodMac ditty played at my memorial.

Off the top of my head, any of these would be good funeral songs:

Fade Into You - Mazzy Star
Here’s Where The Story Ends - The Sundays
Sweet Jane - Cowboy Junkies
Parting Gift - Fiona Apple
Atmosphere - Joy Division
Karma Police - Radiohead
Dear God - XTC
Death or Glory - The Clash
Guns of Brixton - (The Clash) ArcadeFire cover
There is a place in Hell for Me and My Friends - Morrissey
Easy - Faith No More version
Ace of Spades - Motorhead
Shooting Star - Bad Company

Cold as Ice - Foreigner would be amusing

For something less conventional:  In Every Dream Home a Heartache - Roxy Music

I know it’s played out and tired but it would be fun to do Don’t Fear the Reaper with a cowbell rigged in the coffin.

Oh for Goatboy I’ll add:

Gates of Steel - Devo

"Death is not the end” - PJ Harvey, Nick Cave, Kylie, Shane MacGowan, various others. Mainly as the wife hate-hate-hates it, but also for it’s very obvious death tie-ins.

(Personally, I think death is the end, and I’m really quite thankfuckfully grateful.)

"When the lights go out in the city,
And the sun shines on the baaa-aaaaay,
Oooh, I want to be there in my something something,
Whoa-ah-o-a-o-o-o.

Actually, I’d probably just go with “Ding dong the witch is dead” and let everybody there sort it out on their own.

Sung by Munchkins, of course. You have to have Munchkins. It’s not the same without.

What the hell do I care what people think? I’m dead, dammit!

Fer real, I think “In My Life” by the Beatles would bring the house down, and that’s what we’re after, right?

You’ll be DEAD! I think I’ll make them sit through 50 rounds of “It’s a Small World”. I wouldn’t like any of the type of person who would show up for my funeral anyway.

My relatives would probably invite a MINISTER of some sort. I may include some devil music.

oh, I’m getting to where I go to these things. Most are dreadful, but what would it be like if Nobody Showed Up? My relatives would not hire a minister, but I would hope there would be music and food. Funerals, like weddings can be enormously festive events if you just think about it. There should definitely be music.

My grandmother’s funeral was a hoot! My dad was a party animal, though. When we got back to the house (everyone was invited back to our house), my dad stopped everybody and said “My mother would NOT want us to be moping about.” That got the party rolling.

“My mother would NOT want us to be moping about.”

Your granny is my anti-mom, who is big into grief and sad and the injustice of the universe. All day. Every day.

I can see why God keeps her at arms length.
