Long ago, I had the TI99/4a. Damn that was a fun little machine. Then moved up to an AT, but that was mostly just a brick. The kids used it for school papers. Then a Pentium. And my current box for almost 7 years. Gave away the PS1 about 2 years ago. Currently only play on the DS.

First computer was a Sinclair ZX81, where I learned BASIC. Moved up to a BBC Micro Model B, where I played Elite for ages, then an Amiga 500 (a great, great system). Had an Apricot MS-DOS system for writing for years. After that, pretty much just a series of Macs.

Playstation 1 was sold at a yard sale when I picked up a PS2; currently have the PS2 and the modern PS3 (which can’t play PS2 games, grumble). Gaming on PS3, iPhone, and MacBook Pro (OS X or Windows Vista). Occasional use of GameBoy SP and Pippin.

It’s been a pretty wild ride, really!

Launch PS3 60GB with the emotion chip (i.e. PS2 inside) fully backward compatible (now with 500 GB HD).  The new form factor PS3s have newer variant of surround sound processing but too bad they cut out the PS2 hardware so early in the production run (although made complete sense from a cost perspective.  When I gave away my PS2 I gave away a bunch PS2 games saving a select few. I regret tremendously giving away The Getaway and The Getaway Black Monday.  Seriously flawed games but I loved screaming around London in a Lotus Elise or a gokart. The planned PS3 The Getaway III got cancelled by Sony.

Too bad also PSN is slowly dying on the vine. I bought Portal 2 shortly before PSN went down and have yet to play online.  I have such a huge backlog of unplayed PS3 games it is ridiculous.

I have I think four games on my iPhone. Need For Speed Shift, GTA Chinatown Wars, Cut the Rope and the one where you keep a virtual football (soccer ball) in the air.  I never play the games on my iPhone (my nephew does when he’s visiting).

Yeah, I was a little disappointed that the later PS3’s couldn’t run PS2 games—it’s somewhat unusual for features to go away. But it does make sense: at the start of it’s life, the PS3 had to be able to play more than just PS3 titles; and the rather cludgy solution of basically including PS2 hardware inside the PS3 was clearly not meant to be a long term solution.

So I can play my PS1 and PS2 games on my PS2, and my PS3 games and BluRay disks on the PS3. Works out fine.
