01:05 AM | | I have never stayed home for New Year’s in this apartment before, or at any place since I was a kid for that matter. So report from the Times Square vicinity:
The tourists, they are loud. Horns, hooting, hollering, etc. I will not get to sleep for a while, though I am plenty tired.
Oh, and Viacom and TWC must’ve reached a deal. A quick check at 12:03 a.m. reveals that all channels are still working.

Can we qualify that with, “if that’s what you want to happen,” or some such? If I get knocked up this year, I KNOW WHO I’M GOING TO PUNCH FIRST. Wait, that’s Spazmo. Well, after I punch Spazmo, I KNOW WHO I’M GOING TO PUNCH SECOND.

Around that time I heard sirens downstairs, then as they approached, you could hear the cops shouting at people over their car-megaphone thingies. I couldn’t quite make out what they were saying.
I actually fell asleep pretty readily.

10:21 AM | | I’m sure it was Union Square and this building only it was 1973 and my friends mother was renting the second or third floor as an art studio, he and I spent the night there and as it was winter the windows were closed but still all night the horns and sirens never stopped I laid in bed wondering how anyone could ever sleep with all the noise, I fell asleep.

10:41 AM | | Generally at night my apartment is pretty quiet. The loudest sound is the sound of horse hooves, from carriages passing by. NYE is an exception.
In brooklyn you’ll get the car alarm, but not here. Occasionally--very occasionally--there’s a drunk. But not usually.

10:41 AM | | But at 6 p.m. on a Friday forget it. Cars honking non-stop trying to get into the tunnel a number of blocks south of here. Idiots.

10:47 AM | | Union Square is a pretty noise place, yes. It’s a giant intersection, essentially, and there’s the park there. People don’t realize how noisy parks can be when they live by them.

Probably clearing the streets before the CHUD packs came out of the sewers. I hear there’s been a lot of them this year due to their normal food suppy drying up.

02:39 PM | | Dimmer and I went and saw Milk for New Year’s. Good flick; Penn does an excellent job.

06:25 PM | | More remarkable: James Falco turns in a really good performance (for him...) I’m not a huge fan of Van Sant’s pseudo-video style, but otherwise a really solid movie.

04:13 AM | | It opened here about a fortnight ago, and it’s already on the out (only two cinemas in the South Bay still showing it)—so bears close watching in your local schedule. That said, it’s not going to lose much of anything if you catch it on NetFlix or DVD or whatever.
