OK, I think the prof is a douchebag based on the William Wallace photos and the get your shit together comment, but his response is actually very enlightening as to the way an informed business person would have handled this sort of situation as well as also putting the students complaint into an appropriate context (how hard life and business are actually going to be) where it seems like the crybaby foolishness it is.
I remember something that one of Anna Wintour’s assistants said in an article after The Devil Wears Prada film came out. She said that in spite of Anna’s megalomania and ruthlessness, she was never, ever late for anything. It’s just one of those basic patterns of conduct that shows respect (and that you eat your own dog food when it comes to having high standards).
In grad school I learned some important tools for problem solving, as well as an understanding of the way that people in my field think about the problems we encounter particular to my field as well as those shared with others (e.g. information architecture and structural building architecture). Galloway gave an example of how the student’s problem of not knowing about the tardiness policy could have been handled from a risk management perspective. There you go, a new tool.
In summary, I think Galloway is a douchebag who is doing the kid a favor.
