Seriously, I have bad words for those close door button pushers, cause it still works in my building. starting with: Fuckers! Did your mother know how important you were when she was teaching you how to wipe your ass?
Computers and timers now control the lights at most intersections, but at one time little buttons at crosswalks allowed people to trigger the signal change. Those buttons are mostly all disabled now, but the task of replacing or removing all of them was so great most cities just left them up. You still press them though, because the light eventually changes.[/i

Most of the crosswalk buttons around here do work, in as much as if the button isn’t pressed, the walk indicator won’t light up (at smaller intersections, mainly: larger ones where traffic flow provides natural walk-friendly times not so much. Same as the traffic light not changing if there are no cars waiting at the stop. All of which makes sense, really.
