A couple consisting of some of our best friends delayed having children for the first 5 years of their marriage. All the while Ms. C. would always be quick to comment that when she had children, they would be the best behaved kids in the world. Whenever a child would make a disturbance in public, she wold snicker, “ My children would never dare do anything like that.” The C.s had 2 boys almost exactly 2 years apart. By the time the elder was 6, Ms. C. would not leave home with them. They had destroyed toy stores, pet shops, eateries, even a city playground. The debts were piling up, the boys were destroying the house, Mr. C. was eying up his Harley as a way to escape. Then they found hockey. Being able to take their aggression out on the ice changed the boys into model kids. Both went through college on full scholarships. They never made the NHL draft, but one is coaching High School hockey, the other is working as an exec for a minor league hockey team.

I guess my points are, nobody should ever point at anyone else’s kids, and sometimes kids just need the proper outlet for their rambunction.

When one of my kids was about 9, she said “when I have kids, I’m going to be a lot stricter than you”.
