12:31 PM | | Sarah Palin got her first passport two years ago (to comply with pending homeland security requirements) and has, according to John McLaughlin, never been outside of the U.S. (although I would have thought she’d have passed through Canada at some point).

02:14 PM | | Think of the family-friendly policies Palin’s example would seem to brush aside.
I hate them all for this. Really.
I wonder how soon it will be that we find out that she’s either addicted to prescription meds or she has a nervous breakdown.

02:34 PM | | Okay, fixed link. Yeah, to say that Sarah Palin rolls back everything women have fought for, ugh it makes me sick. Great, she’s a working mom. Except forget child care, forget maternity leave (much less paternity leave). And while some may advocate in-conference breastfeeding, I work with some pregnant women who i’d rather they keep it to themselves.
Really, I think after a child is born, both parents deserve a break from the office.

03:26 PM | | I’m not sure I get this whole role-of-mom vs. vice-president thing. If she wasn’t a woman, would anyone care? No? Then drop it.
|
Posted by Lady Penelope 09/03
03:35 PM | | But she is a woman. And it’s central to their campaign that she is. They flat-out picked her because she’s a woman. So i say, what kind of woman is she? If their campaign claims to break the glass ceiling, well, let’s examine that.

03:38 PM | | I like her.
She’ll get the schwing votes.

03:45 PM | | Well, of course you like her. That’s a given.
But as for me, if they’re going to put forward a candidate and say that because we both have a uterus i should jump on the uterus wagon and hop on board, I think i have the right to be circumspect. What exactly is she selling? I don’t like her snake oil.
That picture is deeply disturbing. Did you make that yourself?

I don’t think it has anything to do with a ‘glass ceiling’ or whatever. I think they figured they’d grab a few ex-Hillary voters and horny guys. And they did. Mission accomplished. It’s not that big of an issue, her being a mom and working. With the exception of feminists, people have evolved beyond that kind of preoccupation.

Poor Spazmo. His limited male mind doesn’t understand that feminism isn’t a uniform, static concept. Silly boy, stop thinking with the big kids and show us some titties. And get me a drink while you’re at it.

No, but feminists uniformly rock in bed, and that’s what counts. Did you think I hang out with you because of your cooking?
Which is like saying, “with the exception of women.”
No, more like “with the exception of jealous women who like to bicker about silly crap” Come on, this ain’t the 70s. Women work. Some are moms. It’s not an issue anymore.

Sabine Ehrenfeld is smokin’ hot.

There is a legitimate issue surrounding parenting irrespective of her gender. Sarah Palin has been put forward as a representative of the conservative right of the Republican party. The conservative right espouses intolerant ‘our way or the highway’ views on matters such as sex education, birth control and abortion (Sarah Palin opposes abortion even in cases of rape and incest.) They demand that only abstinence be taught to young people. The personal, otherwise private, circumstances of her family reveal the hypocrisy and folly of these positions. Sarah Palin believes that parents should only teach their children abstinence and presumably should not to take five minutes to talk to their children about using condoms. She believes the only option for two clearly immature teens facing an unplanned pregnancy is to get married (presumably when the option hiding the child as a secret family shame is not available).

Sure. The issue is - she’s living the life of a modern person but she’s a far-right Republican. That’s definitely a legit issue for discussion.

No Spazmo the issue is her hypocrisy in steadfastly espousing positions on social and moral issue that, notwithstanding their merits, clearly do not work in practice. Exhibit A being her own family.

Therein lies the hypocrisy.

04:39 PM | | I think it’s also an issue that she’s selling herself as the ultimate American mother, and selling her experience as a mother as part of this “life experience” that we ought to elect her on. In which case, well, she’s made an open book of herself.

04:48 PM | | Come on, this ain’t the 70s. Women work. Some are moms. It’s not an issue anymore.
How is it not an issue anymore? Do we have universal child care for working moms? Maternity and paternity leave policies (I mean policies that work and don’t penalize the parents)? Shit, a woman can’t even feed her own kid without everyone going apeshit because IT’S INDECENT, and meanwhile we can’t turn left nor right without being flashed with some hollywood skank’s tattered clam*.
I think it’s hilarious—and by hilarious I mean tragic—that Palin is held up as feminist-bait—HOLY SHIT SHE’S A WORKING MOTHER. Meanwhile her party hates women, women’s bodies and women’s children (the very children they insist on being born by blocking access to abortions, sex ed and contraception, and then once they’re born, dumping them and their moms on their asses.)
/gosh that made a lot more sense in my head…

05:18 PM | | Do we have universal child care for working moms?
Nope. Nor working dads. Nor health care for millions of Americans. That means we really need to push for universal health care coverage. The issue is taking care of people. If you want to put that under the feminist umbrella then that’s convenient for you.
Meanwhile her party hates women, women’s bodies and women’s children
That’s your opinion. Most pro-life people are concerned about the life of an unborn child. Sorry, this isn’t about you and your bod for once. Go back to reading Self.

Yeah, now see? I’m with Lady P on that one. I think some things shouldbe kept to yourself. Sometimes I really feel the need to squeeze one off during meetings, but I try to keep that to myself. Wait… our society is against guys giving themselves squeezers! How puritanical!

Actually universal health-care is a top priority on the feminist agenda. And I thought I mentioned paternity leave up there; I know I meant to. If you actually bothered talking to me about feminism instead of trying to bait me into an argument or hurling abuse at me and then running away when I explain myself, you might find out what I and many other feminists stand for.
That’s your opinion. Most pro-life people are concerned about the life of an unborn child. Sorry, this isn’t about you and your bod for once. Go back to reading Self.
Ok, I can’t tell if you’re really joking or not.

Well, we’ll have to agree to disagree here, as breast-feeding is not an act of masturbation. And while I would not be crazy about the idea of my boss whipping out a boobie to feed her kid while we’re talking profits and loss (and most women I know would not want to whip it out either), I do think it’s important to have spaces other than a bathroom where women can breast-feed. You want to eat lunch where some dude just took a Taco Bell shit?
|
Posted by Lady Penelope 09/03
05:35 PM | | To argue FOR child care doesn’t argue against universal health care. We can be for both. Child care should be a parental issue--a mother and a father issue--unfortunately, it’s frequently a mother issue more than a father issue. The cold reality of it is that as long as its women who give birth, they’re doing most (though not all) of the raising.

In theory, I think, GREAT IDEA! I’m so behind this. Then I think, wait. Does that mean there are babies at work? Are they going to be crying? And then I’m like, no. No babies. I hate babies. No babies. No.
Because I’m selfish that way. The sound of babies crying is how they torture people at Gitmo.
