I don’t believe the looters have any notion or motivation beyond the opportunity to loot merchandise. Class/social/economic circumstances almost certainly inform their perception of the consequences of their actions as insignificant. No job to lose. No university to get kicked out of. Social stigma from the community? I don’t know. Whilst class barriers, racist attitudes and economic realities present a bleak outlook for young people in these communities, unlike the Arab nations listed, there is nothing admirable, no idealistic pursuit, in this behaviour. They are destroying their own neighbourhoods for the thrill and immediate gratification of a cheap bit of kit. The callous disregard for the safety, security and lives of others is unconscionable.
It happened in the 60s and 70s in L.A., Detroit, and Chicago, and it can happen again.
Thirty years ago we had the Brixton riots. It seems that not much has changed.

08:47 AM | | The father of one of the three young men who were killed by a hit-and-run driver two nights ago in Birmingham (the father of the other two had a heart attack yesterday, BTW) said to a group of would-be rioters in the street yesterday “WHY ARE WE DOING THIS? I LOST MY SON. STEP FORWARD IF YOU WANT TO LOSE YOUR SONS. OTHERWISE CALM DOWN AND GO HOME. PLEASE. PLEASE GO HOME.”
(Sorry about the all-caps. Copy-and-paste job so I’d get the words right.)

11:02 PM | | I think it doesn’t really matter if the oppressed group is coherent in their rage, everybody recognizes bullshit when it’s piled all over the top of them, and you can count on a real nasty reaction. Yeah, there was some stupid-assed looting, but I think its to be expected when the options for improving your situation are so narrow. I think if there’s ever a disruption to television cable service in the US, we can expect to see the same.
