As long as we don’t make it hard for adults to get entertaining video games, regardless of content, and as long as we don’t restrain the freedom of expression of video game makers, it’s all good.
Well, first define “hard”—do I have to go to a computer game store in a shady area of town, risking my life if some crack-head thinks their addiction is more valuable than my need for “Chopper Gore Quest Gold Special Limited Edition”?
Again “restrain the freedom of expression of video game makers”—by removing them from the market, of course you restrain their freedom. How many of your local cinemas will ever show an NC-17 flick? Damn few I’ll wager. So many film ideas, intended for a mature audience, will never get made just because of this—the fact that they’ll never get distribution.
The gaming industry did the right thing with their own ratings. Sure, it’s not perfect, but this is one task I wouldn’t want to have governmental control in. And “Online Content Not Rated By ESRB” is fine and inevitable. Just as I can put up a web site for “Diarrhetic Pup Consumers Anonymous”, I can, and should, be able to tell my Touchlight buddies to eat my shit.
