This came up in a recent discussion… relics of a long gone pre-time-shifting PVR era… What television shows do you remember from childhood as weeknight/time specific events?

I remeber distinctly from my teen years:

- The Cosby Show at on Thursdays on NBC
- Miami Vice Friday night on NBC

Some of my earliest North American television memories (aided somewhat by discussion with my older brother):

World of Disney and Wild Kingdom (sponsored by Mutual of Omaha) on Sunday nights (7pm NBC he says);
All In the Family Saturday night, CBS;

Some very Canadian shows:

Hockey Night in Canada Saturday night on CBC
The Beachcombers Sunday night on CBC
Reach For The Top Sunday night on CBC which my brother was on and I will only explain if someone asks or is otherwise a fan of Alex Trebek or the movie Magnolia

We didn’t watch a lot of TV when I was a kid except on Sat. and Sun. evenings. Saturdays were always CBS for “Have Gun-Will Travel” followed by"Gunsmoke." Then after local news, it was “Producers Playhouse.” It was a locally produced segment on the Minnesota Iron Mining industry preceding an uninterrupted movie, usually a flag waver. It was the hosted by Earl Henton. He was also the 10:00 PM news director. My Dad was featured in one of the segments around 1964 as the red-ore era started giving way to taconite production.

Sunday nights were “Ed Sullivan” and “Bonanza” and then upstairs to listen to AM radio and reading.

The Love Boat and Fantasy Island: Saturday night with Grandma.

I remember that also, minus Grandma.

Oh you missed out. Grandma wore her hair red till she was 75 or so. She tried to cook for us, bless her heart, but she was terrible, partially due to her diabetes. She didn’t use sugar, even in pie. And she slyly cheated at cards and scrabble, even against her grandkids.

She swore up and down that she had nothing to do with the death of her multiple husbands (and we believe her), and that she only loved the first one, mostly because she was afraid that when she got to heaven they would all be waiting for her, cross with her after having discussed with each other her infidelities.
