I’m kind of a chip connoisseur. I like Cape Cod’s Salt and Vinegar for 3 reasons: good crunch, vinegar is from powdered vinegar - not some chemical, and they don’t add lactose.
Flavored chips are a minefield for the lactose intolerant (or vegans who are also avoiding lactose) as they sneak it it into flavors that have nothing to do with dairy and often - like salt and vinegar - aren’t even sweet. I think this is because it helps the flavorings stick to the chips.
I also recommend Zapp’s a brand from Louisiana that you can sometimes find in gourmet stores - Wegman’s carries them in the sandwich shop part of their stores - but not in the chip aisle. They make some fine spicy varieties including jalapeno, and Cajun Crawtators.
I’ve also tried Gibbles which are mentioned in the article - they are OK, but not that great - not cut thick enough in my opinion, and the flavor choices aren’t that exciting. But PA is definately the mecca of the snackfood world - the first really good chips I ever had were called “Uncle Don’s” and came from the Pittsburgh area. I think they are now defunct.
For a good value in good chips, try the Archer Farms kettle chips found at TARGET (I’m partial to the Buffalo Chicken Wing flavor); or if you find them - Krunchers brand.
